El triunfo de Hunahpue Ixbalanque: paradigma del renacimiento en la religión de los mayas

   Krzysztof Murawski (Varsovia)

The Popol Vuh is a famous example of K´ichean indigenous literature. The main part of the most famous version of this texts recounts the story of two heroes, The Heavenly Twins called Hunahpu and Ixbalanque. Murawski's 1984 study tries to summarize and understand the role and symbolism in the K'iche Maya indigenous ideology. The Popol Vuh is analyzed and compared with complementary Maya ethno-historic sources. In the search of meaning of these two figures, their characteristics and actions are compared to the practice of self-sacrifice, which is also discussed from the perspective of Carl Jung's ideas.

Los problemas de la reconstrucción de los calendarios prehispánicos andinos

Mariusz S. Ziółkowski y Robert M. Sadowski (Varsovia)

In the pre-Columbian Andes, as in any other pre-industrial culture, calendar systems, did have very important role but did not see much research before the 1970's. There are numerous difficulties in researching the subject that relate not only to the lack of source material but also to geographical, ethnical and social background. Many different ethnic groups lived in different parts of the Andean region. According to Ziółkowski and Sadowski these differences resulted in the existence of many calendric cycles. While studying the calendars it is important to understand the group that was using it. For example, despite the popularity of the lunar month among their people, the Inca elites used a solar calendar in their capital city.

The article contains an appendix consisting of a reconstruction of the cuzquean luni-solar calendar and its correlation with the Julian calendar for the years 1532-1550.

Las generaciones del mundo según don Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayála

   Jan Szemiński (Varsovia)

The "Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno¨ of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala can contribute to the understanding of Andean concepts of divinity and acts of creation. The ¨Corónica" contains vast portions of text which address God, while other sections describes different eras and worlds that were supposedly in existence before the Inca realm. Szemiński argues that such descriptions were written by Guaman Poma to explain the indigenous ideas to Europeans. Szemiński disagrees with the claim that the idea of five eras-epochs that Felipe Guaman Poma included in his account originated from European medieval concepts. He argues that this was a local, indigenous concept.

Cuba 1869: desafectos al gobierno e insurrectos

   Tadeusz Łepkowski (Varsovia)

The Ten Years' War was the one of the first important manifestations of the independent Cuban movement. The conflict lasted from October 1868 to February 1878. The year 1869 was the very beginning of the conflict Łepkowski's articles uses it as reference point to mark the first independence claims by the Cubans and to analyze the first conceptions of Cuban national identity. According to Łepkowski in 1869 there was no clear division between the Cubans and the Spanish. The sides of the conflict didn't strictly relate to the issue of nationality but rather to being loyal to the specific Spanish regime of that period. Moreover, outside of the rebel groups and Spanish and Cuban loyalists, there were significant numbers of people that did not sympathize with either side.
