Acerca de algunas funciones de los keros y los akillas en el Tawantinsuyu incaico y en el Perú colonial

    Mariusz Ziółkowski (Varsovia)

Abstract/short description

The decorated keros (wooden libation cups) and the akilla (silver cups) from the colonial period are of extreme importance in the studies of Inca culture. According to Ziółkowski's etymological study here presented the names kero and akilla relate to the material being used, quero or queru meaning wood in Quechua. In the prehispanic period the cups were made of different materials like gold, silver, wood and clay, depending on the owner;s social status. After the prehispanic period availability of metal materials decreased – wood become the most frequently used material. As a move to increase the value and prestige of the keros painted decorations were introduced.

La Nación mexicana en el siglo XIX (observaciones sobre el concepto de nación y sobre la fraseología nacional)

    Tadeusz Łepkowski (Varsovia)

Abstract/short description

Łepkowski's article illustrates the change of language used to describe Mexican national identity. It all started in 1810 with the Mexican War of Independence, when the earliest forms of such expression were used for the first time. Mexican national identity was not developed at the time, so terms such as América Mexicana or Nación Americana were used. The people referred to themselves as Americanos. Only after Iturbide the name Mexican Empire was introduced because traditionally 'empires' are named after their capital cities. This led to abandonment of the "Americano" identit. Łepkowski also notes other transformations of what was considered key traits of Mexican national identity: religion, the form of government and finally the concept of nation.

Historia y cultura de México a los ojos de los polacos (1945-1975)

    Barbara Kubiak (Varsovia)

Abstract/short description

The state-based relations between Mexico and Poland had only begun in 1928 when Poland opened Consulate in D.F. Mexico. During the interwar period Poland had limited insight into Mexican culture: the main interest of the Polish audience was in the anticlerical politics of Cardenas. According to Kubiak the years of 1939-1960 saw no recorded interest into Mexican politics in Poland that relates to Cold War politics. Meanwhile, Mexican culture was present in books, newspapers and press. After 1951 a number of films was screened in Polish cinemas. The article presents the results and analysis of a poll that Kubiak conducted where around 800 poles where asked simple questions about Mexican geography and culture.
